Before this spring season of anime began, mecha anime fans were cheering and rejoicing over the fact that there was to be, not only one mecha anime streaming, but three. The first Majestic Prince, which I have already written about in a previous article (here), has proven to be a fairly enjoyable show with its own traits and nuances. The second show, Valvrave, is a near to complete mess of a series that can be summed up with the phrase: Space Vampire Mecha. It is enjoyable only from the perspective of someone who knows that it is terrible. Lastly, comes Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet). Being spear-headed by writer Gen Urubuchi, Madoka, Fate/Zero, and Psycho-Pass, there were many high hopes for this series. As we come to the conclusion of the show though, it is apparent that this hope was for naught. Gargantia’s plot is convoluted to the point where there is no clear direction, the characters are all lacking in true development, and even the overarching political/moral point of the story has been lost.
With the revelation last week that Ledo is not alone, the follow up episode moves swiftly to establish the new standards. Ledo’s former commander has inspired a group of religious zealots bent on bringing the standards and goals of the Human Alliance back to earth. Pinion and the fleet are forcefully absorbed, with no other option available. And Ledo begins to revert back to his old self now that a bit of home has arrived. Nothing can go wrong from here, right?
After last week’s revelations, our intrepid hero Ledo is left in a state of confusion. Pinion is seeing dollar signs with the destruction of the Whalesquid. And Amy is still shedding tears over the departure her boy crush. What twist does this week show us?
After last week’s departure, we find ourselves with Ledo and Pinion on the hunt for Whalesquid/Hideauze and treasure. As expected, Ledo dives into combat with reckless abandon, with Pinion backing him up with riches in his eyes. With each moment, their plan of attack is ruthless executed. But when Ledo enters the underwater facility, he finds more than just his enemy. He finds his past. And it’s nothing like he expected.
