5 Reasons ZZ Gundam is Awful and should not be considered Canon

This image does a fair job of summing up both the show and my hate for it.

Having only recently begun to watch anime, the list of shows that I have watched is rather low, I believe only around one hundred or so. Yet, one franchise that I cannot get enough of and refuse to ever stop watching, is the Gundam franchise. I grew up watching Gundam Wing and G Gundam, and it holds a very special place in my heart. I love the action, and I truly enjoy the different types of interactions between the characters within the Gundam universe. Yet though I enjoy the Gundam universe, I have to say that ZZ Gundam is one of the worst anime I have watched as of yet. Not only as a sequal to an amazing anime such as Zeta Gundam, but as a stand-alone anime as well.

Gatchaman Crowds: Summer Show of the Season

[Commie] Gatchaman Crowds - 07 [BFE8C10B].mkv_snapshot_21.38_[2013.09.16_20.25.54]

With the summer season of anime at its near peak, I suppose it’s finally time for me to come out of my cave and write up some articles. This season of anime has been particularly lackluster for a mecha / adventure lover such as myself, but overall, I can say it has turned out better than I first expected. There are a few hidden gems this season that, as the season has progressed, have turned into shining stars. For now though, let’s jump straight into one of my favorite shows of the season: Gatchaman Crowds. As a quick note, I have tried to keep spoilers to a minimum, but proceed at your own risk.

Fansubs, How They Came to Be and How They Hold a Unique Spot in the World of Television

In this episode, part one of a two part series, I explore the history of fansubbing from the late 70’s to mid 90’s. In the series, we’ll be exploring how it is influenced by the anime market, and how it influences both the market and expectations of the viewers. We’ll also take a look at the unique place fansubs sit in the media world, concerning legality and copyrights.

Suisei no Gargantia: Going Everywhere, Ending Nowhere

[UTW-Vivid]_Suisei_no_Gargantia_-_01_[h264-720p][FA28D2FD].mkv_snapshot_21.48_[2013.06.28_00.45.02]

Before this spring season of anime began, mecha anime fans were cheering and rejoicing over the fact that there was to be, not only one mecha anime streaming, but three. The first Majestic Prince, which I have already written about in a previous article (here), has proven to be a fairly enjoyable show with its own traits and nuances. The second show, Valvrave, is a near to complete mess of a series that can be summed up with the phrase: Space Vampire Mecha. It is enjoyable only from the perspective of someone who knows that it is terrible. Lastly, comes Suisei no Gargantia (Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet). Being spear-headed by writer Gen Urubuchi, Madoka, Fate/Zero, and Psycho-Pass, there were many high hopes for this series. As we come to the conclusion of the show though, it is apparent that this hope was for naught. Gargantia’s plot is convoluted to the point where there is no clear direction, the characters are all lacking in true development, and even the overarching political/moral point of the story has been lost.

Getting in Together-Eureka seveN AO Episode 22

[AraAraUfufu~] Eureka Seven AO - 22 (720p x264 AAC)[8A83F46A].mkv-00_02_16-00001

[Eureka seveN Episode 21]

As Otou at Sea Slugs laments, the “plot twists” are set up to try to drive you to feel surprised. They want you to go “holy cow, I didn’t expect that”.  But honestly, I don’t think us as the audience are all that surprised any more. It would be more surprising if the show would finish one continuous thought, before randomly dropping something new on top of us. And with that, let’s dig into the last AO episode for the next two months.

New Alliances-Eureka seveN AO Episode 21

Eureka Seven AO Masked Elena

[Eureka seveN AO Episode 20]

Loyalty and Allegiance seem to be a very fluid concept in this show. In a short span, we have both Ao and Elena defecting to the other side. We have Big Blue World dropping Generation Bleu and declaring them rogue. And the remaining members of Team Harlequin joining up against Pied Piper. To me, it’s all contradictory to the guiding principles of the original series.

Forgotten Truths-Eureka seveN AO Episode 19

Eureka Seven AO Secret Head

[Eureka seveN AO Episode 18]

Yes, I know I’m a week late. Between family and work, life has gotten busy this Fall. But honestly, that’s no excuse. I guess the reason I’m really late is an indication of my growing frustration with this show. And this week’s episode, with it’s shotgun approach to unraveling mysteries and creating new ones, was almost a letdown. It was utterly anticlimactic.  And why do I think that?
