In most anime schools, the disciplinary committee gets a bad rap. An unmovable force for the rules, they seldom show compassion in the face of a wavering belief in justice. But we learn something interesting this week, as Ryuuko encounters Ira Gamagoori, the head of the disciplinary committee.
Events are set in motion, as Satsuki announces her new election system in which students must survive a seven-day battle against each other in order to stand out on top and earn, or re-earn, their Goku Uniforms, sending the entire school into a frenzy. Meanwhile, Ryuko takes Mako to the ruins of her old house, searching, but coming up empty handed, for clues in the basement where she found Senketsu. As Ryuko and Mako head home, their scooter runs out of gas. Much to their surprise, they run into Ira Gamagoori, who, having just attained his driving license, offers to take them to a gas station. During their drive, they are attacked by the combined automotive and airsoft clubs, who are targeting Ira for his Three-Star Goku Uniform. Recalling how he first met Satsuki, Ira unleashes his uniform, which uses the power of masochism to evolve into Scourge Regalia decimates his opponents. At the school election, Honnouji’s strongest assemble for the Sudden Death Runoff Election, with only Ryuko and the Elite Four making their way to the top. There, Satsuki challenges Ryuko to defeat each of the Elite Four in exchange for details concerning her father’s death, her first opponent being the person that just helped her, Ira.
Ira Gamagoori is an interesting character. While he is focused in his school duties, there is also a bit of compassion for his classmates as well. His offer to help Ryuuko and Mako is true to his code of honor as the head of the committee, despite them being (mortal) enemies. And after watching his flashback, the second one of the four strongest, you begin to get a picture of how the current situation came to be. It’s going to be hard to believe that any of them were forced to follow Satsuki. Her willpower and strength alone bring such a deep admiration from those directly under her, that they willingly follow behind. While none of the four seem to be on good terms with each other, they all fall in line of the leadership Satsuki brings. It makes for a very interesting dynamic, and leads to questions should she ever fall from power.
As for Ryuuko, she is finally getting her wish. She no longer has to fight her way through underlings to get what she wants, She only has four opponents to beat to make it to the top. But as she found when she faced the last three star, these fights will be far from easy. I would almost say that she’s is not capable of defeating them yet. She fights in almost fit of rage, without working through her opponents weaknesses intelligently. With the knowledge she gained of Ira’s uniform, I would think she wouldn’t stand a chance. A tough lesson is in store for our leading lady.
As for a little speculation, let’s assume that Ryuuko does make it to the top (before the fall anime season ends), and does defeat Satsuki, what then? The Four Strongest remind me a lot of the history of Alexander and the four generals that took over after his death. I can see the school breaking down into factions around this four, and anarchy reigning supreme. It would make for a very interesting second half to the season.
But she has to make it that far first. Which in all honesty, is going to be a very tough road. One that, without some brains behind that brawn, I don’t think she is capable of finishing.
