Coppelion has an interesting past. A long running manga (which I haven’t read yet), it was slated to become an anime with much anticipation. Then, the earthquake hit, and the Fukushima disaster occurred, the series was delayed. And after watching this first episode, I can understand the delay. This series will probably hit close to home for some. But for the rest of us, I think we have a fantastic little action series on our hands.
In 2016, a catastrophe occurs as the nearby nuclear power plant contaminates Tokyo, forcing an evacuation. 20 years later, Tokyo has become a ghost town due to the high levels of radiation. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force dispatches 3 genetically engineered teenage girls, Ibara Naruse, Aoi Fukasaku, Taeko Nomura, of a special force named Coppelion. They are are immune to radiation while also possessing special skills. Their mission is to journey to the ruined capital to find survivors.
There’s a subtlety to this show that I enjoy. In this first episode, they use a slow pace, and a lack of music and sound, to impress on us the vast emptiness, isolation, and somewhat loneliness of the situation. Tokyo has been abandoned. No one is supposed to be living there anymore, and they did a great job of relaying that.
And the story couldn’t include three more different characters, each with their unique quirks and traits. They seem to fill the roles of leader, scout, and support. I hope we’ll see these characters change under pressure. I want to see a story with some growth and change under stress. It would lend this story some credibility beyond it’s setting. Because honestly, sending them in school uniforms was a bit cliché for my liking.
Overall, I like this show. I liked the potential of where it can go. There’s an entire city to explore, with an unlimited potential for scenarios. We’ll have to see if GoHands and make something good in this adaptation.
