Quick Thoughts–Kill la Kill

I’m excited for the Fall season this year. There is the potential for some great shows. At the forefront is Kill la Kill. And after watching this first episode, I was not disappointed.

Kill la Kill is the first full series developed by Studio Trigger. If you don’t know already, Trigger was founded by former Gainax employees Hiroyuki Imaishi and Masahiko Ohtsuka two years ago in August 2011. They roared into the forefront of the anime scene with their original net animation Infero Cop, and their wildly popular short film Little Witch Academia. If the name Hiroyuki Imaishi seems familiar, its because he won an individual award for Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. And it’s his influence that is blatantly apparent in this first episode. And I love it.

This first episode followed much the same format as the start to TTGL. An unlikely hero, a boss battle to win, and a power with unlimited potential is unleashed. This first episode was complete in itself, setting the stage for what’s to come. It teases the viewer with tidbits of information that will hopefully come to relevancy as the story progresses forward. And the visuals were straight out of Imaishi’s playbook, harking back to the great action scenes of TTGL, and in concert with fantastic combat action.

Am I heaping on the praise a bit much for a first episode? Probably. It is Trigger’s first series. But, we’re also dealing with a crew of people that were the best of old Gainax. Hopefully, they can progress through this world they’ve created without a serious misstep or sidetrack. One thing that did worry me from the first episode was the liberal use of nudity. while not ‘fan service’ in the more liberal definition by shows such as Queen’s Blade, it definitely could become an unneeded distraction from a show that definitely doesn’t need it.

All in all, this was a good first episode, giving us a great first impression, and leaving the viewer wanting more. I’m excited to see where Trigger and Imaishi take us with this series.

Honestly, after that opening episode I have a hard time believing that any other new show of the autumn line-up could possibly top it. It’s been years since I’ve seen a first anime episode that had such impact, not to mention pure funk. It’s not even my usual style, but I loved every minute of it! Pure, unadulterated fun.

It’s going to be hard to top, in more ways than one. The Noiatmina look pretty good, but not this good. And just think, we get to watch this through the winter!

We’re both very much on the same page with this show. It’s only a matter of seeing in Studio Trigger can reign in this wild horse enough to give us an exciting, but also memorable series.

Thankfully, they don’t have to go at this pace every episode. Now that we’ve got the world established, things can settle down a bit. And, we do have some experience in the studio. I want to believe that this studio and show can do it.

Agree. I loved the manic energy it gave off and the sheer over the topness of it all. I haven’t had that buzz since I saw Redline. My only worry is how they’re going to deliver over the course of many episodes.

At it’s heart, it’s the same crew that did TTGL. While I really like the first half, compared to the second half of the show, it was a great series as a whole.. We can only hope they pace it well, and bring back the magic from the past.
