Worlds Apart – Suisei no Gargantia Episode 2

Suisei no Gargantia 02 Offering of Fish

[Suisei no Gargantia Episode 1]

With all of my random speculation from last week, I was bound to be proven wrong on a few items. But, I am happy that I was wrong on some important points. But what did this week hold for our intrepid spacefarer?

Suisei no Gargantia gives us the opportunity this week to get a sense of the back story of what has happened on earth since Ledo’s predecessor’s left for the stars. Although Ledo finds himself in an uneasy stalemate, Amy is willing to break the ice, and start a healthy dialogue. But, even that isn’t without it’s complications. As an astronaut from an advanced race, apparently they advanced beyond the need to eat their protein in it’s original state.

We find that during a point in Earth’s history, the world froze over. It’s population chose 2 paths: One group headed for the stars. The others stayed behind to tough things out, and thrive in a now thawed out world. And, thankfully, this world exists in the same time as Ledo, so we don’t have to deal with any nasty time travel issues (Eureka AO anyone?).

The real differences become apparent in the shows final sequence. When the salvagers come under attack from a violent group of pirates, Amy pleads for Ledo’s assistance. Seeing this as an opportunity to earn a favor, Ledo boards Chamber, and proceeds to not only disable the pirate ships, but evaporate the pirates into a puff of steam. The shear efficiency of the weapons is quite amazing, and leaves everyone stunned.

This episode did a good job of closing up the opening events. It gives us a sense of Earth, it’s place in reference to those who left, and what conflicts we will see in the future. It’s become readily apparent that the technological gap is going to create a strain between Ledo and the members of the fleet Gargantia. You can almost feel the impending conflict if the rest of the space faring humans ever come back.

I like the way this show has been set up. In typical Gen style, we’re left with a lot of elements to chew on. What kind of arrangement will the leaders of Gargantia make with Ledo? What retaliation will the pirates take for the loss of the ships and men? Will it be humans or aliens that show up to Earth first? So many things to consider.

I’m glad you picked this up. The show is setting up to be something pretty special IMHO.

I think that Red ( that’s what they call him at least in the translation I have for Ledo) is going to find that instead of winning many friends, he’s actually going to be the object of fear for many. The way he took out those pirates was absolutely ruthless.

The whole setup of 2 groups of humans, those who stayed on Earth after a catastrophe and those who left and are superior technologically reminds me an awful lot of Turn A Gundam.

His name has come across two different ways. But we all know who were talking about 😉 I agree that his actions are going to end up regressing rather than advancing his relationship with this tech-less humans. Ruthless is an understatement. I was shock and awe at it’s finest.

I’ve never seen Turn A, but some other bloggers have been watching it recently, so maybe I’ll pick it up.

DAT ENDING! I was like whooa….I guess Red and Chamber will help the people of Garantia to get what he wants and I am sure they will do the same thing with his awesome mecha power!

Whenever Amy and Chamber had their chats together my mind was thinking it was Kotoura and JOJO talking ahahah

That ending was something. I’m interested now in seeing how this effects his stance with the people of Gargantia. Will they fear him? Being a soldier is so ingrained in his being that it’s going to be impossible to separate it from him.

      You and your Jojo/Kotura flashbacks … 😉

Suisei no Gargantia is definitely one of the stand-outs of the spring anime season – in fact, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t end up being the best show of the new line-up. I don’t often tend to go for sci-fi anime, but so far I’ve been really impressed. I only hope that this continues as strongly as it’s started out.

It is a pretty good show. The art is great, and so far the plot is going well. We’ll have to see what twists ‘ol gen is going to pull before I start getting too excited. If you’re really enjoying this, I would give Majestic Prince a chance too. There’s just something about it that makes it enjoyable to watch.

No bloody time travel (at least as far as we can tell)! Yay!

You bring up a good point when you mention the feeling of impending conflict. I felt the same thing at that moment. It’s an ominous feeling.
