After a rousing victory, and loss, by the humans, things have once again settled down. And in a time of peach, our characters find themselves in other pursuits. As has always been the Demon King’s goal, she returns to efforts that will bring up the quality of life in the Human world. But in times of peace, there are always those that are looking for ways to cause disruption and discontent.
Education and the printing press
The Demon King is a restless soul. Her never-ending quest to force change is the most important single driving force in this entire story. And her latest ‘invention’ will being to revolutionize that world as much as it did ours. The printing press could arguably be the defining invention that helped bring Medieval Europe out the dark ages and into the Renaissance. The ability to replicate knowledge at unbelievable speeds revolutionize the spread of information. It changed a process done entirely by hand into a factory like automation. What I find interesting is the introduction of her inventions to this world follow a similar timeline that of real history. It makes me want to go and find more about the development of this story as much as read the story itself.
Money Ignores Borders
And no one can say that Hero is sitting on his hands. When an unexpected visit from Young Merchant occurs, he uses the opportunity to introduce him to an unheard of concept. His brief visit to Gateway City shows Young Merchant what the future could hold. I enjoyed how Hero plays into the profit and loss mindset of Young Merchant; which forces him to put aside his bias, and realize the untold potential of peaceful coexistence with the Demons. Because honestly, even in our world, money crosses borders and can friends as easily as it makes enemies. And two countries tied together financially will find it harder to start a war with each other later.
Idle Hands are the Devil’s Playground
All this happiness wouldn’t be complete without someone getting jealous. As the story told early on, the Southern Nations were at the mercy of the richer Northern Nations. The funding they received bankrolled the war and kept their countries afloat. But, with the agricultural success of the south, combined with a battle that frees up trade routes, the economic balance has changed. The Southern Nations are gaining strength. Their financial stability is less dependent on the ‘charitable’ funds from the North. They are reaching a point of self sustenance.
And there are those that don’t like it when the ones that were underfoot start making decisions on their own. And when a jealous strikes, those with the most influence and power will start to make things difficult for others. And in these last two episodes, we’ve seen those that want nothing more than the status quo to continue. We have a spiteful King, and angry Church that want nothing more that to crush the Winter Nation and kill the Crimson Scholar. Some of my favorite moments from the story are about to be revealed. And I have high hopes that this will help take this anime from being as average as it’s been, to something better.
